Bulgaria is a traditional tourist country with active international tourism developing since the 60’s. The Bulgarian seaside resorts such as Sunny Beach, Golden Sands, Albena, Duni, Drouzhba, Sunny Day and others are particularly popular on the international tourist market. After the democratic changes at the end of the 80’s and the beginning of the 90’s the Bulgarian resorts underwent some structural changes and a process of privatization. Now they start a new life.
The resort of Sunny Beach is one of the best and most famous Bulgarian seaside resorts. It is 95 km south of Varna, 36 km north of Bourgas and in close proximity to the town of Nessebar.
The transport access from inland and abroad to Sunny Beach is provided via:
- ‘Black Sea’ Highway and main entries of the old track of the road Bourgas-Varna which is the main inner artery and motor transport carrier in resort;
- Bourgas Airport – 30 km from the resort;
- Bourgas Railway Station – 40 km from the resort;
- The port, sea terminal and marina in Nessebar.
The landscape of Sunny Beach is flat, situated almost at the sea level, confined by the eastern side of the Old Mountains to the North, the Black Sea to the East and the new residential districts of Nessebar to the South. The sandy sea bed is sloping gently with no sudden drops.
Composed of fine homogenous sand the beach strip is 6 500 m long and 40-50 m wide at the average. Dunes forming a nature reserve of 86 ha are located at its back.
The local climate is greatly influenced by the clearly expressed breeze circulation. As per the local weather service data around 1/4 of the days /90.2 days at the average/ are characterized by breeze circulation. This influences the diurnal and annual run of wind direction and speed, air temperature and relative humidity. As a result the average monthly air temperature over the active tourist season does not exceed 20°С while the average monthly humidity ranges from 60 to 65 %.
The period from June to September is characterized by a minimum of overcast days /3-4/ and a maximum of clear days /18-24/ a month.
The combination of the above dynamic and thermic indices as well as the large number of clear days describe Sunny Beach as a place of exceptionally favourable for recreation and tourism climate with a five-month active tourist season.
Until recently Sunny Beach had an overall capacity of 25 000 beds. Most hotels were 2- and 3-star. At present the resort area is being renovated rapidly, hotels’category being enhanced and the small tourist complexes’ infrastructure being improved. |
